Radio walkie talkies are devices that combine a radio transmitter and receiver, allowing users to communicate over long distances. They can operate in both the UHF and VHF ranges. There are two types of radio walkie talkies: handheld units with a microphone and speaker or handheld units with just the speaker.
Many police departments use hand held radios for communicating with each other during an active pursuit or to stay in contact when officers split up for tactical purposes. A number of aircraft have been known to use them as well, especially older ones that don't feature standard cockpit radios but do have external communications capabilities enabled by a VHF out-of-band transceiver (VOX).
