Digestive enzymes are secreted by the pancreas, stomach, and intestines. These enzymes break down the macromolecules in food into units that can be absorbed by the small intestine.

Enzymes are required to digest certain substances, for example proteins and carbohydrates. They allow us to extract more of the energy from our food than we could if all digestion were done by chemical reactions alone.

There are many types of digestive enzymes that differ in what they do as well as where they work in your body.
