Dhoni will be playing for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2019. So, I don’t think the team management is particularly looking for a new captain. Even in his worst form, it's almost imminent that he will continue to lead CSK, thanks to the rapport and respect he enjoys. And why not really! Under his captainship, he has ensured CSK qualifies for the playoffs every single time. Under his leadership has the team won the IPL title historic three times. So, Dhoni will remain the captain of Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2019.
However, the most interesting question is "what then".
Dhoni will be playing World Cup 2019. And it’s almost assured that he will retire from all formats of cricket following the tournament. This would also include the Indian Premier League. So, this might be the very last time we would see the Thalaiva in yellow.
So, in IPL 2020, CSK would definitely have to look for a new captain to lead the team. Fortunately, the team has many names who can replace Dhoni (although they would be far from matching Mahi's excellence and on-field class.
Faf du Plessis is one of the first names that come in mind. He is the captain of the South African national team. So, he already has a much better portfolio. Plus, he's an incredible batsman. However, one of his biggest USPs is the energy he brings on the field. He's very athletic and energetic. And he seems to get along with other players good. His whole personality ooze of that 'leadership' image. So, I believe he can be a great captain of Chennai Super Kings in the absence of MS Dhoni.
