In 2018 first bilateral hand transplant took place in Tamil Nadu government Stanley medical college. Narayanasamy was the patient who lost his hand in an electrocution in August 2015. He was the mason by profession and was a resident of Dindigul. The operation went on 13 hours on 9 February dr. drama Devi who was the head of the surgical team said he was monitored every time.
The limbs were taken from M.Vankatesan who was declared as the brain dead.
Now after six to seven months the patient started to tap the ball, use a mobile phone and drink water by holding a glass. Narayansamy’s progress has been rapid than predicted. Narayansamy said “My family was devastated when my hands were amputated. But I came to Stanley Hospital with confidence and courage, and here I am. It is two months since I started to tap and catch a ball. I can take the mobile phone from my shirt pocket and speak. If my mother keeps a ball of rice on my palm, I can move my hand to my mouth and eat.”
He is regular in practice of exercise and physiotherapy and doctors make sure that there is a good supply of blood. He is very excited to recover soon and work properly with his both the hands again.
