The 26 th November commonly referred to as 26/11 is a date that is remembered in India as one of the most painful and dark days in the recent past. On 24 th July 2008, a sustained spate of carefully-planned terror attacks rocked Mumbai, and went on almost three days. Ten armed terrorists chose to enter the city by sea and attacked some known and busy buildings, including the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Oberoi Trident, CST railway station, Leopold Cafe and Nariman House. The attacks killed 166 and injured hundreds of people. The magnitude, cruelty and the amount of violence were shocking to the whole country.

The most traumatic part of 26/11 was the turn of events on the live television. Individuals could see on the real time as hotels were ablaze, security agencies fought off heavily armed attackers and frightened civilians attempted to flee. The nation held its breath waiting to get news about their beloved as families waited anxiously whether the siege would finally end. The pictures of those days are still difficult to remember to many people.

The courage of the attacks is one of the key factors that make the date so emotional. Police men, soldiers, commandos and hotel staff put their life on the line to get others out of the situation. A good number of them perished in the course of duty. The tales of heroism, when railway employees saved the lives of passengers at CST and hotel workers helped their guests to safety became the icons of the strength and humanity in the middle of the mayhem.

26/11 was also a turning point to the national security of India. The incident resulted in enhanced surveillance at the coast, better counterterrorism initiatives, and better coordination of security agencies. It brought to the minds of the country the need to be prepared and vigilant.

Every year, 26 November is celebrated in India to remember the atrocities as well as honour the heroes who did not hesitate to respond. The nationwide memorials are conducted in the country, particularly in Mumbai, where families, officials and citizens assemble to honor the memory of lost people.

To put it simply, 26/11 is etched in memory due to the fact that it was a time of great tragedy, great courage and profound effect. It remains as a reminder of a tragedy that brought the nation together in sorrow and a spirit of strength and determination to combat terrorism in all its manifestations.
