Dhanteras is the Hindu festival of light. It is celebrated sometime between mid-October to mid-November in India, marking the beginning of the six-day Dasara festival season. The god Krishna is said to have received divine instruction for Lord Vishnu while playing with his beloved friends during Dhanteras celebrations. This day coincides with the winter solstice, because that's when daylight starts to decrease and darkness begins to prevail.
Many Hindus believe that during this period, Goddess Lakshmi also visit earth in search of her consort - Lord Vishnu - who has gone missing. The festivals in India are celebrated in the month of Phalguna in the Hindu calendar, which corresponds to late August in the Gregorian calendar.

According to beliefs, Lakshmi - the goddess of wealth - is considered beautiful even by Lord Vishnu's standards. Therefore, Lord Vishnu remains "missing" during Dhanteras due to his love for Goddess Lakshmi.
The celebrations begin on seventh day of Kathina (full moon) with sacred thread ceremony by swayamsevaks (worshipers) near river Ganga at Haridwar or Rameshwaram. Lakshmi Rath is also celebrated on the same day.

Lord Vishnu's birthday festival is celebrated in the Hindu month of Chaitra. But, Lord Vishnu is missing during Dhanteras because he turns into a bug called barka-vasi (a type of flying ant).
Vishwamitra Parva, Mahabharata mentioning that the festive season during Chaitra which marked the completion of Sree Krishna's education, was marked by night-long festivities with great pomp and show. People were said to have decorated their homes with flowers, vines and garlands, gifts made of flowers were distributed to support Krishna's education but not on Dhanteras.

Dhanteras is celebrated on the 13th day of light fortnight in Kartika month according to Hindu calendar. It is also celebrated on dashami, tenth day of bright fortnight in Ashwin month and some devotees observe fast on the day.
According to Puranas, Sree Krishna while playing with his friends once accidentally hit his foot while playing gilli-danda with a stick. The stick broke into two pieces and fell. He was surprised and wondered where it had disappeared.
But Lord Vishnu feeling sorry for this action put his hand down and found the two pieces of stick which were glowing like lights.
