This year, however, the festival will be celebrated on 15th January, instead of 14th, and it has a reason.

On 14th January, 7:52 pm, the Sun will enter into the Capricorn, and the time duration between 14th January 1:28 am and 15th January 12 noon, is quite auspicious for this particular zodiac. So the charitable deeds will be fruitful on 15th January, in the day time.
On the day of Makar Sankranti, the Sun’s Capricorn line moves towards North. The Prasad offered on this day is that of Khichdi. Gud, Til, Revdi, and Gajak are also offered. The significance of this festival lies in it falling at the time when farmers and peasants are enjoying their time and seeing their crops mature.
From the time of harvest to the change of season, everything depends on the position of the sun, so does the day when this festival is celebrated.
