Is Bitcoin a currency or commodity?

Bitcoin is designed as a distributed payment system for equal partners who conduct business without using a middle man and thus it is a medium of exchange. Bitcoin can also be defined as synthetic commodity money i.e. Selgin, which shares features with both commodity monies like gold and fiat monies like the U.S. dollar.
