One of the most controversial topics since the U.S. went through the drastic changes after its Civil War was enslavement of black people. When slavery was abolished, some children were left with no parents while some were born into slavery while others escaped to freedom during this time period known as Reconstruction which lasted from 1865-1877. By 1880, all laws concerning slavery had ended and there were differing opinions about what should happen with these children that had been separated from their parents.
