Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is a versatile fuel gas that consists of a flammable mixture of hydrocarbon gases, primarily propane, n-butane, and isobutane. Small quantities of propylene, butylene, and isobutene may also be present in LPG. LPG is widely used as a fuel in various applications such as heating appliances, cooking equipment, vehicles, aerosol propellants, and refrigerants. When used as a vehicle fuel, it is commonly known as autogas or simply gas.

 

Uses of LPG
LPG finds extensive use across different sectors including agriculture, recreation, hospitality, industrial, construction, sailing, and fishing. It serves as a cost-effective and efficient fuel for cooking, central heating, water heating, and heating off-grid homes. Moreover, LPG is utilized in the chemical industry as a feedstock for the synthesis of olefins like ethylene and propylene.

 

 

Characteristics and Advantages

 

  • Density and Vapor Pressure: The density and vapor pressure of LPG vary significantly with temperature, impacting safety considerations in its applications.
  • Storage: LPG is typically stored in pressurized steel vessels filled to 80–85% capacity to allow for thermal expansion.
  • Environmental Impact: LPG burns more cleanly than petrol or fuel oil with lower emissions of particulate matter. It releases a lower amount of carbon per joule compared to butane but a higher amount than propane.
  • Taxation: Many governments impose lower taxes on LPG compared to petrol or fuel oil to offset their higher consumption rate.

 

Safety Measures

 

  • Storage: LPG must be stored in pressure vessels designed according to specific codes like those by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
  • Odorant Addition: An odorant like ethanethiol is added to LPG for easy leak detection.
  • Regulations: Different countries have standards for LPG; for instance, the European Standard is EN 589.

 

Comparison with Other Fuels


LPG differs from other gases like Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) in terms of composition, weight-to-mileage ratio, environmental impact, storage methods, and safety considerations. While CNG is mainly methane-based and used in automobiles, LPG has broader industrial applications beyond transportation.
