The biggest reason!? England played much better when it mattered. Period. And India didn’t.

It would be naïve to say that India stood any chance in the Test series. Don’t get me wrong. I was all in for them. BUT when playing against England, who’s recently in incredible form, and that too on their home turf—the task-at-hand was very difficult. India fought fine. And yes, ViratKohli is right. The 1-4 loss margin doesn’t really underline how well India played on many fronts and the fight the team gave to monstrous England players.

For instance, I am really psyched about KL Rahul. Been his fan for long. Despite the loss, the tournament went well for him. And he may have finalized a permanent spot in the test team. He played a beautiful 149 knock in the second inning of the 5th test. Also, throughout the series, he was the only player from the Indian side who was really fine in fielding.

Similarly, I am impressed by Rishabh Pant who, too, scored a ton in the second inning of the final test match against England. Of course, he has to improve a lot behind the wickets but even then, Dinesh Karthik will now find it very difficult to make a place for himself in the team.

In the bowling department, it became very evident that the team lacks an Ashwin-calibre bowler. JaspritBumrah and HanumaVihari played well in the final match, but Shami continued struggling throughout the series. As always, Jadejadelivered a consistent performance, slowly transitioning himself into a senior player that youngsters can look up to.

As for ViratKohli, he was great with the bat. However, in the captaincy role, there was a lot left to be desired. He struggled with field placements (and we missed MS Dhoni). Also, for whatever reason, on the field, he didn’t look as connected and bonded with all the players as a captain should. Hardik Pandya and Pant evidently looked to be his favorites. But then, of course, it’s just an individual’s observation. I could be wrong.

All in all, yes, India lost the test series in England—and disastrously at that. 1-4. That sucks! However, there still a lot that the team can learn. For instance, Sunil Gavaskar pointed out correctly: India should have played more warm-up matches. Also, the team requires a much better lower-order batting. And most importantly, it’s okay if Kohli couldn’t captain the test team. Rohit Sharma and even KL Rahul can fit in that role much better.

Test series in England was a disaster. Entertaining and exciting to watch—but a disaster nonetheless. But there’s a lot more cricket coming up. And as we know it, Indian team will make a great comeback.
