Indian Flag is a matter of Pride for the country but very few know about the Indian flag and the person who was behind it. There is so much that is not known to many like me. A freedom fighter from Andhra Pradesh Pingali Venkayya designed the first Indian National flag. This flag was hoisted at Parsi Bagan Square in Calcutta. It was hoisted in August 7,1906 and had three horizontal stripes in green, yellow and red colour. This design of the flag was first shown to Mahatma Gandhi in 1921 and it was adopted as Indian Flag in 22 July 1947.There was modification done to the earlier design and our present day flag came into existence. As per law the Flag cloth has to be Khadi, which was made famous by Gandhi. This is cloth spun by hand from cotton or silk.Earlier people were not allowed to use Indian Flag for any occasion other than the Republic Day and Independence Day ,in 2002 Supreme court of India gave the right for Indian citizens to hoist the national flag any time keeping the sanctity of the Indian Flag in mind.

Pingali Venkayya made the Indian National Flag in 1916. It was raised on August 22, 1947 when India became independent from British rule. The flag is made of three colors: red, white and green.

The red in the Indian Flag symbolizes courage and sacrifice, as it has always been used for this purpose in United Kingdom's flags; the color stands for bravery on a battlefield. In Indian culture, it is thought to be the color of energy and life. For Hindus, it means purity and power. In Arthanaya, the sacred book of Hindus, the word red is used in ten different meanings.

The three colors of the Indian Flag were made by using the international codes of distress signals. The code for red is used for danger, or that an emergency has occurred. The code for white means peace and that all should be calm under those conditions; and green means life or continue to live.

The national flag of India is rectangular in shape and consists of three color bands at the top, representing the colors of the Indian Tricolour. Each color is equal in width and has a thin white border. The center band is blue in color, depicting nonviolence, truth, faith, saffron for sacrifice and renunciation of divine authority by the people. It bears a five-pointed star with each point bearing one of these colors: saffron (yellow), vermilion (red), white or green (white). The navy blue background has a diameter of 2.

The Indian National Flag was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on July 22, 1947 when it was officially proclaimed as the national flag, thus making India one of the first countries in the world to adopt a tricolour flag. It is in the proportion of 1:2; divided vertically into three bands — saffron (top), white and green (bottom); there are eight panels in the vertical direction (top to bottom) and eight stripes in each panel; taking together, there are 14 stripes, of which seven are saffron, six white and one green; with a blue Chakra drawn on the white band. The ratio of width to length is 3:2.

The flag was designed by Pingali Venkayya in 1916.
