John Lennon was tragically killed on December 8, 1980, outside his New York City apartment by Mark David Chapman. Chapman, a former security guard and YMCA employee from Hawaii, shot Lennon as he and his wife Yoko Ono were returning home. Chapman, who was obsessed with Lennon and disillusioned by his wealth, cited a desire for fame as his motivation for the murder. He believed that Lennon's wealth symbolized hypocrisy and aimed to promote the reading of "The Catcher in the Rye," a book he identified closely with.

Mark David Chapman was immediately apprehended after the shooting and later pleaded guilty, receiving a 20 years-to-life sentence at Green Haven Correctional Facility in New York. Despite multiple parole hearings, Chapman has been denied release, with his latest denial in 2022 where he acknowledged the evil nature of his actions and his pursuit of fame at any cost.

A recent three-part documentary titled "John Lennon: Murder Without a Trial" provides fresh insights into the assassination, featuring never-before-heard eyewitness accounts and interviews with individuals closely connected to the event, including police officers, lead detectives, and Chapman's lawyer. The documentary also includes recordings of Chapman under hypnosis in prison, offering various explanations for his actions and reliving the moment of the murder.

This new documentary aims to provide a comprehensive profile of Mark David Chapman and shed light on the motivations behind John Lennon's tragic murder.
