Why don’t the cigarette lighters-12V power sockets in newer cars have constant power like they did in older cars?

In the past times the main thing that went in a cigarette lighter was a cigarette lighter, now'er day individuals have a wide range of thing which they can undoubtedly neglect to unplug which could deplete the battery.

I had a client once who's vehicle battery had gone level on their Rolls Royce, Silver Shadow. It required a long time to discover what was causing the channel. It ended up being a golf ball, stuck between the switches for the front power seats and the cigarette lighter, keeping it squeezed in. I don't recall 'charging' him for the work.

In older cars, 12V cigarette lighter sockets had constant power, but newer cars switched to ignition-controlled sockets. This change prevents accidental battery drain from chargers, dash cams, or coolers left plugged in. It also protects sensitive modern electronics and ensures reliable starts. While some models still offer a mix of constant and switched outlets, most newer vehicles prioritize battery health and safety, making ignition-based 12V sockets the standard choice today.
