Yesterday, Google celebrated the 187th birthday of the ‘Father of Modern Football’, Ebenezer Cobb Morley with a doodle. But the question is why is he called the father of modern football? It’s possible that many of us won’t be even knowing who he actually is. Let’s see.
Ebenezer Cobb Morley, in 1863, changed the face of world’s most popular sport, Football, famously called Association Football at that time. Before this, Football, which used to resemble rugby, was a chaotic sport with different sets of rules in different games. Morley set the foundation and the 13 rules for Football Association (FA), the oldest official governing body of Football.
Morley became the captain of Barnes Club and wrote to the newspaper Bell’s Life in 1863 for an official body for Football, whose popularity was increasing. He was FA’s first secretary until 1866 and its second President until 1874.
Football earlier was violent and unregulated. Ebenezer Cobb Morley laid down 13 rules of the sport, making it less violent and more beautiful. The order and free play was introduced by him.
Google’s doodle depicts Marley writing a letter (signifying the letter he wrote to Bell’s Life) while in the background are two fields, one with the older version of the game, and one of the modern version.
