World Sparrow Day is an annual event celebrated on March 20th to raise awareness about the conservation of house sparrows and their declining population. The day was first celebrated in 2010 in India and has since spread to other parts of the world.

Additionally, 20th March is also significant because it coincides with the birthday of E. A. Selous, an English ornithologist who was one of the first people to study house sparrows in depth. Celebrating World Sparrow Day on this date helps to honor his contributions to the study of these birds and to highlight the importance of continued research and conservation efforts.

The house sparrow, also known as the common sparrow, is a small bird that is found in urban and rural areas across the world. It is considered an indicator of the health of the environment because of its close association with human settlements. However, in recent years, the population of house sparrows has declined significantly, and they are now considered endangered in some parts of the world.

The reasons for the decline in the house sparrow population are many, including changes in agricultural practices, loss of habitat due to urbanization, and pollution. In addition, the use of pesticides and insecticides in agriculture has resulted in a decline in the sparrow's food sources, such as insects and seeds.

World Sparrow Day is an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of conserving the house sparrow and its habitat. The day aims to highlight the need for individuals and communities to take action to protect the bird and its environment. The celebration also serves as a reminder to governments and policymakers about the need to prioritize the conservation of biodiversity.

The reason for choosing 20th March as World Sparrow Day is that it is the day of the equinox, which represents the beginning of spring in the northern hemisphere and the beginning of autumn in the southern hemisphere. This is significant because house sparrows are migratory birds, and the equinox marks the time of year when they begin their migration to different parts of the world.

In conclusion, World Sparrow Day is celebrated on March 20th every year to raise awareness about the declining population of house sparrows and the need to conserve their habitat. The day provides an opportunity for individuals, communities, and governments to come together and take action to protect this important indicator species. By taking action to protect the house sparrow, we can help preserve the biodiversity of our planet and ensure a healthier environment for all.
