Originally, these pockets we supposed to be watch pockets. You see, back in the days, men would carry pocket watches and they needed a safe place to keep that watch. So, manufacturers started stitching these tiny pockets within the bigger pockets for this purpose. This trend followed and continues even to this day even when literally no one carriesthe pocket watches.

While I am not entirely sure, this same theory applies to why pockets in women’s pants are quite small. It likely has plenty to do with what manufacturers thought in the past. Back then, women weren’t really tasked to do much and carry a lot of things. They had purses and bags. It could be strategically planned by the purse/ bag industry to keep it small so that women have to buy a bag !! So, the need for large pockets never really came up. However, just for the aesthetic shake, manufacturers stitched the pockets to the pants—but the smaller ones though. This trend followed too. And today, we have women’s pants that have too small pockets.

Another reason I see is women, at least today, look for skin-tight jeans that accentuate their curves. So, to make sure the fitting isn’t loose or have patches or baggy effects, manufacturers usually stitch very small pockets that are functional but doesn’t disturb the desired aesthetic.

But I wish they were big. Phones do not fit and keys need space too... But then do not the baggy jeans have that already?!
