Why we celebrate New year in 1st January?

It is said by our ancestors the day is celebrated to give the honour to the Roman god of beginnings,janus the roman god has two faces from one face he can see the past and from second face he can see the future and from the day is celebrated as new year.People celebrate this day by wishing each other happy new year and celebrate with friends and family by exchanging gifts.
