From my perspective, calling it just a “branding exercise” would be unfair, but it’s also true that fixing infrastructure is a long-term process that can’t be completed in just a few years. The $1.2 trillion Bipartisan Infrastructure Law created funding for roads, bridges, public transit, broadband, and clean energy projects across the country.
Under Buttigieg’s leadership as Transportation Secretary, thousands of projects have been announced and started. However, infrastructure improvements take time-sometimes years-to fully complete. So while progress is happening, many people may not yet see immediate results in their daily lives.
Critics argue that the impact hasn’t been visible enough, while supporters say the groundwork has been laid for major improvements in the coming decade. Both perspectives have some truth to them.
In my view, it’s neither a complete success nor just branding. It’s an ongoing effort that will likely be judged more accurately years from now, once more projects are finished and their real-world impact becomes clear.
