Making sure whether information on a website is credible and authoritative is very important. Otherwise, we may be the victims of fake news and may not get the information that we are looking for. Therefore, to make sure that the website you are using to find information is credible and authoritative or not, here is a list of signs you can look at:
- Look for established institutions' sources. This means sites which are specifically run by government agencies/organizations, non-profit organizations, credible foundations, or educational institutions like schools and/or colleges.
- Try and find sites with some sort of expertise mentioned. In real life, you will go and find specific people for some specific problem. Similarly, you have to specifically mention what your problem is when you are looking for a website.
- Don't look at commercial sites/advertisements for information. In such cases, these websites/advertisements will try and sell you products and you will not get the desired information.
- Don't go to websites which have any sort of biases in them. Those websites are either heavily political, or don't give you the complete picture of what really is going on. They will only give you one side of the story which may cloud your judgement.
- Make sure to check the date before looking for information on any given website. Sometimes we tend to go to any website we find first. However, before doing so, we should always first check the last updated date on that website. If the website is way too old, then don't look for information from there. Go to websites which have the most recent content/information on them.
