How could the war affect the global economy and peace?

We already know that the wars going on around the world, especially in the Middle East and Ukraine, are very bad for global peace and economic stability. The recent rise in violence in the Gulf has made India very worried about the safety of our diaspora and the security of our energy supply. Rising oil prices and problems with the supply chain cause inflation, which slows down growth around the world. India is still pushing for dialogue and diplomacy to restore order and protect the world economy, which is in line with our values.

Honestly, when a conflict like this starts between major powers or in a sensitive region like the Middle East, the first thing that comes to my mind is how quickly it can ripple across the whole world. It’s not just about the countries fighting — it can affect fuel prices, trade, and even global stability.

Here are a few big ways a war involving Iran and the U.S. could impact the global economy and peace.

1. Oil prices could shoot up

Iran sits right next to the Strait of Hormuz, which is one of the most important oil routes in the world. Around 20% of global oil supply passes through this narrow waterway.

If fighting spreads there:

  • Oil tankers may stop sailing.

  • Insurance costs for ships rise.

  • Oil supply drops.

From experience watching past crises, whenever something like this happens, petrol and diesel prices go up almost everywhere, including in countries like India.

2. Global markets become unstable

When war news breaks, investors usually get nervous.

Stock markets in places like:

  • S&P 500

  • FTSE 100

  • Nifty 50

can suddenly drop because companies and investors fear economic slowdown.

At the same time:

  • Gold prices usually rise (people see it as a safe investment).

  • Airlines and shipping companies face higher fuel costs.

3. Risk of a wider international war

The scary part about conflicts in that region is that many powerful countries are involved indirectly.

For example:

  • United States

  • Iran

  • Israel

  • Russia

  • China

If alliances get involved, a regional war could turn into a much bigger geopolitical conflict, which is what world leaders try to avoid.

4. Impact on global peace and humanitarian issues

War always affects civilians the most.

Possible consequences include:

  • Refugee crises in nearby countries

  • Damage to cities and infrastructure

  • Disruption of food and medicine supplies

Organizations like the United Nations usually push for ceasefires to prevent these humanitarian disasters.

War can disrupt global trade, increase inflation, weaken economies, create instability, and threaten international peace through political tensions and humanitarian crises.
