The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) got involved in an exciting battle with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) where Dhoni, who has been around for quite a while, produced a moment of absolute cricketing brilliance reminiscent of a former T20 World Cup success led by Virat Kohli. This was one match that was filled with anxiety as both sides battled it out on the pitch to show who was better at the game. By this time it was clear that once again Dhoni would want to recreate some moments from yesteryears.
Few runs were needed by CSK for victory and Dhoni borrowed leaf from Kohli’s playbook during the 2016 T20 World Cup, handing over captaincy duties to Ruturaj Gaikwad, his young successor. It may also be deduced from this simple gesture that besides being confident in Gaikwad’s abilities, Dhoni served as his mentor as well as friend in CSK camp. In anticipation of what they hoped would forever remain in their memories, fans broke into wild cheers when Gaikwad headed towards the crease.
CSK required a few more runs in order to win the match as it entered its final overs and Dhoni felt that he wanted to lend the proceedings some nostalgia. He mimicked Kohli’s famous action of pointing towards the dressing room with a mischievous grin which signified that now is the moment to finish off the game in style. The spectators screamed loudly when they saw Dhoni making this homage to his fellow cricketer and understood what it really meant.
Thereafter, in an act of masterly leadership, Dhoni passed on the baton of captaincy over to Gaikwad thereby allowing him, as young as he was, to play a decisive role in finishing off the game. This move was symbolic because it demonstrated Dhoni’s trust upon his team mate’s abilities as well as his commitment to cultivating young talent among his players. Gaikwad then came out swinging with four consecutive boundaries securing CSK an impressive victory.
The stadium erupted into joyous celebration not just for a win but for a single moment that epitomized what cricket is all about – teamwork, leadership and friendship between teammates. Dhoni’s mimicry of Kohli and his decision for Gaikwad finishing off the game were much more than tactics; they symbolize what sportsmanship and unity mean in that team.
