IIT again confirmed why it is the best, as two students from IIT Delhi, Amit Kumar and Rituparna Guha, made India proud by winning a prize money of Rs.1.7 lakh as the James Dyson Award. James Dyson is an international design competition started by the British entrepreneur, James Dyson, for young intellects.

Don’t you want to know what these two geniuses designed?

The device that they designed is a wheel chair called Samarth, which transfers mobility-impaired patients conveniently to other places. Amit Kumar and Rituparna Guha designed it after their visit to Cheshire Home for Disability, where they interacted with many such patients who find it difficult to shift to other places from their wheelchairs.

“They also realised that this is the problem which has been haunting most patients suffering from paraplegia in India”, says a report.

Last year, a student from IIT Kanpur also won the award in India for designing efficient stretcher that transfers the patient without any pain.

The international winner of the James Dyson competition would be chosen this year later, after going through hundreds of applications from all over the world.

Here is a snippet of the reported words of Amit and Rituparna:

"Many sleepless nights at the design studio, repeated visits to the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre, Cheshire Home for Disability and rounds between wholesale markets, numerous prototypes and lots and lots of feedback brought us to what we call Samarth. We have nurtured this because we saw potential in it to reduce the pain and inconvenience caused a lot many suffering people in India.” (Source: Jagran Josh).
