Sticking to the basics – and not trying the unnecessary home remedies like baking soda, lemon and what not – is the best way to maintain good oral hygiene.

Here are a few things you should do every day, without failing, for the rest of your life to have good oral health:

• Brush at least two minutes a time. And his means brush “thoroughly” and not squeeze it between your teeth and waste minutes. Cover every corner and angle. Don’t ignore the backside of the teeth which easily gets overlooked.

• Brush at least twice a day. The first thing in the morning and the last thing in the day. If possible, you should even brush in the afternoon after lunch. (Remember though, you don’t want to overdo this. It could lead to tooth enamel abrasion.)
• Change your brush every three months. Even when it looks good with no significant wear-off, you still want to change it.
• Pick the right toothbrush. Pick the one that has the flexibility and good angles to reach the corners of your teeth adequately. Also, avoid picking a toothbrush that has hard bristles. It can cause enamel abrasion. (In short, avoid the cheapest brush!)

• Scrape your tongue after brushing to get rid of the built-up plaque. If you don’t have tongue scraper, simply brush your tongue lightly for a few seconds.
• Use mouthwash. Many people undermine its importance but it packs plenty of benefits. Like reaching and cleaning parts of your mouth where the brush cannot reach. They also clean your gums. They remove the acid in your mouth. And, also, if done for a long period, they re-mineralize the teeth. So, buy a good mouthwash and use it at least once a day.
• Don’t forget to floss. It can clean off the plaque that gets settled between teeth and small areas after meals. Flossing once a day can make the biggest difference.
• Drink more water. And say no to carbonated/sugary drinks; they contain dietary acid that, over a period, leads to enamel erosion. Drink plain water; more of it. It will wash off all the small crumbs that get stick in the mouth.

• Visit a good doctor every six months. It is recommended that you see a dentist twice a year. But if the majority is to be considered, I would believe that you don’t even remember the last time you went to a dentist, right? ;)
These are a few basic practices to maintain good oral hygiene at home.
In case, if you’re already facing dental problems, like pain and erosion, the first thing you should do is go and see a doctor. Avoid looking through the home remedies on the web. Let a qualified professional lay out a plan for your problem.
