There is no denying that India is not a very safe country for girls, and after rapes, acid attacks top the list of crimes against the half of the population of the country.

Reason can be any but the result is only one –the destruction of the life of an innocent.

I can think of only three reasons that are behind acid attacks in India.

1. One-sided love

Let’s face it –men in India being the product of patriarchal set-up are not good at handling rejections. They have, right from their childhood, been taught to take what they want by hook or by crook. If they fail to do so, it’s a question posed straight to their masculinity. Along with this, our entertainment industry and other cultural norms have guided us to take women as objects and their consent for granted.

All these things sum up in actions which are screaming out aloud –if she can’t be mine, she can’t be anyone else’s. Some of them mistake the rejection as the arrogance and excessive pride of the girl due to her beauty. So the best thing they think they can do is to destroy the beauty, the face.

2. The feelings of revenge

Some guys do this because of the feelings of revenge. And in this category, even the girls are not behind in taking revenge through acid attacks on other girls. Youth is so impulsive and short-tempered these days that even a small fight can prompt a guy or a girl to act in this way.

3. Out of jealousy

Jealousy is a common feeling that two girls share for each other. You just can’t say that if two girls are very good friends, they would never feel jealous of each other. This can even happen between two sisters or a pair of cousins even.

A girl feels jealous of another girl due to her beauty, or better performance in career or studies, or it could be any other situation depending upon the life situation of the individual.
