We all have heard of transfer of energy, but how many of us have heard of transfer of learning. By transfer of learning we mean to apply the knowledge and skills learnt in one situation and to use them to learn knowledge and skills in another situation.

Types of transfer learning:
1) Positive transfer – When the knowledge or skill acquired in one field is helpful in learning the knowledge in another field, it’s called positive transfer. Ex. Knowledge of maths can be used in solving numerical for physics.
2) Negative transfer – When the knowledge or skill acquired in one field is an obstacle in learning the knowledge in another field. Ex. Knowledge of science and the cause and effect relationship inherent in it being an obstacle in the study of theology and philosophy.
3) Horizontal transfer – When the knowledge or skill acquired in the same level of class is helpful in learning the knowledge in another field in same class. Ex. The knowledge and skills in maths learnt in class X is helpful in solving numerical problems of science in same class.
4) Vertical transfer – When the knowledge acquired in the previous class is helpful in learning the knowledge in next classes. Ex. The knowledge of maths in class X can be useful in class XI classes.
5) Zero transfer – When transfer of learning is neither positive nor negative, then it is called zero transfer.
