At best, PM Modi's Independence Day Speech from Red Fort was clichéd. And expectedly, Modi pulled Modi with his never-stopping Jumlas, announcements, and tongue theatrics.
Yes, he said, “India is now a land of reform, performance, and transformation.” Talk about the rhyming
In short…
August 15 2018 turned out to be another Independence Day when, what would be an incredibly anticipating speech from an Indian Prime Minister that would define the course of the country for the next year, was turned into a humdrum affair where our “Pradhan Sevak” went out all-guns-blazing to win the brownie points before General Election 2018.
Here are a few of the highlights of PM Modi’s Independence Day Speech that, to sane heads was just another Modi-saga but for the sell-out media was “great content”:
(I) India will send humans to space by 2022, on the auspicious occasion of 75th Independence Day. “India will unfurl the tri-color in the space.”
Yes. Indian Space Mission— when millions of Indians are still dying of hunger. *a round of clap*
(II) Mr. Modi also announced that Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Abhiyaan will finally be launched on 25th September.
This is Modicare, the rendition of USA’s Obamacare. The scheme is ambitious with an annual Rs 16,000 crore cost. It will potentially impact 50 crore Indians. Again, the scheme is ambitious and, at large, revolutionary. Although the states like West Bengal already have similar programs (Swasthya Seva). However, in a country like India, having such schemes isn’t a major concern. We already have countless programs like these, even in healthcare. It is their implementation that’s the biggest problem. An announcement like this, right before General Election 2019, do you smell something political?
(III) The Modi government is planning to double farmers’ income by 2022 through the ‘Beej se bazaar tak’ program.
In his Independence Day speech, the PM said that their focus is on bringing changes in the agriculture sector. For the past 4 years, what did they do on the ground to make that happen is still not very visible! Over 12,000 Indian farmers commit suicide every year. Between 2014 and 2015, under the Modi government, farmer suicides rose by 40 percent. Talk about change!
(IV) “Before 2014, several of the world's acclaimed organizations and economists used to term India as a ‘High-risk- economy’. These are the same people who are now praising us for our reforms,” said PM Modi when talking about the progress the Indian economy is making. This farce of a statement looks shameful to the fact that only 12 hours back from his speech, the Indian Rupee touched the record low against the USD, breaking the INR 70 mark. Yes, now $1 = Rs 70+.
(V) On the topic of Kashmir, PM Narendra Modi said, “We do not follow the path of abuse and bullet. We believe in the idea of embrace.”
Please, someone, go and tell him and his scriptwriters that according to numbers, in 3 years of the Modi government, militancy-related deaths in Jammu and Kashmir have risen by 42 percent. *another round of clap*
Much like all the above mentioned, PM Modi’s Independence Day speech was filled with many other lies, rhetoric, and misinformation to give ‘Godi media’ enough content to run right-wing propaganda.
Mr. Modi made the most of his last Independence Day speech of this tenure with his orange and red headgear!!
