Umar Khalid was shot on 13th August outside the Constitution Club but escaped narrowly. Who was the shooter is not known. This happened when Khalid was going to attend an event entitled “Towards a Freedom, Without Fear” (Khauff se Azaadi). Ironic! Isn’t it?
"There is an atmosphere of fear. If you speak against the government, you will be branded and then anything could happen to you”, says Khalid as reported by many news channels. He further commented that the real culprits behind the attacks are the ones who are in power and are spreading hatred and bloodlust all over. The shooters, he said, are those who feel themselves empowered in the present regime.
It’s clear that after the attack, Umar Khalid has become even more vocal in criticizing the Modi Government. He tweeted today: "Modiji, you had asked for suggestions for your I-Day speech. I have a suggestion to make - can you please state that you guarantee that there will be no attack on those who criticize your government and its many failures."
This is yet another attack on the Modi government on the grounds of freedom of speech and expression. So the attack on the eve of Independence Day -signifies according to Umar Khalid, and suggests according to general opinion -the fear which is lingering over our freedom as the citizens of India.
