Honestly, this whole sting on Bollywood/TV stars doesn’t really make a whole lot of sense. But this doesn’t mean this "Operation Karaoke" by Cobrapost shouldn't be taken seriously. It's an extremely serious matter -- for a country like India, in particular, where stars are hailed so much higher.

But first coming to the problem with "Operation Karaoke"…
I watched a couple of clips. The undercover people are too broad and basic in their approach. They don’t even say they are affiliated to a party. They say a party is their client, and that they are working for them on their digital campaigns. Next, they ask the stars to not exactly post politically-charged messages but rather talk about certain social issues. Following, they even say that the stars don’t have to post anything that they are not comfortable with. And then comes the money talk…

Again, the overall approach by Cobrapost is quite broad and flexible. What if, moving forward, that star would have refused to post any politically-charged message?

Also, yes, they are celebrities, but they are also citizens who have their reserved political alignments. If they are getting paid to talk about things that they already support, who would refuse the money?!!

And third, most importantly, yes, Cobrapost might claim "big celebrities", BUT none of these 36 stars are big names in the industry. So, their influence on voters, if any, would have remained meager.

So, this "Operation Karaoke" by Cobrapost doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. And MOST IMPORTANTLY, it doesn’t tell us anything that we don’t already know. It's not difficult to assume that stars and influencers do take money from political parties to spread their propaganda.

Now coming to different aspects of this sting…

How much media coverage is "Operation Karaoke" getting? Pick up the newspapers and read. Switch on your TV and watch. Visit news websites and see.

You will realize that the majority of news outlets are eerily hushed on this topic. Meaning, while the sting exposes the celebrities, in the same breathe, it also has exposed the hypocrisy of the mainstream media.

"Operation Karaoke" by Cobrapost has virtually failed to gain the massive traction that it so truly deserves. Much like how it happened with "Cobrapost Operation 136" in 2018 when so many news channels/platforms were exposed to be favorable to a few political outfits. People do not even remember that sting. ScoopWhoop, too, was exposed in "Operation 136"; did you stop reading ScoopWhoop articles? Likely not!

Besides, this expose comes at a time when terrorism and Kashmir attack is dominating all the headlines. No one cares about little-known (and little-relevant) celebrities taking money to spread political propaganda.

"Operation Karaoke" by Cobrapost is just another spectacle that will soon be forgotten.
