As of 2014, only three Indian films—Mother India, Salaam Bombay! and Lagaan —have been nominated for the Academy Award for "Best Foreign Language Film".

First Indian movie submitted for Oscar was Mother India released in the year 1957. This Mehboob Khan-directed classic was nominated for the Best Film in A Foreign Language category, and almost won it. It only lost to Nights Of Cabiria by one vote.
