As indicated by Wikipedia, the main programmed vehicle wash machine was created in 1961 by the Germans Gebhard Weigele and Johann Sulzberger (authors of WESUMAT Autowaschanlagen GmbH). A patent was recorded in 1962.

In 1964 Sulzberger recorded a patent for the main completely programmed vehicle wash, which enabled the client to remain in his vehicle amid the washing procedure
