Akio Morita (1921-1999) was a Japanese businessman and entrepreneur who co-founded the Sony Corporation. Born in Nagoya, Japan, Morita studied physics at Osaka Imperial University before serving in the Japanese navy during World War II. After the war, he and his friend Masaru Ibuka founded Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corp. (which later became Sony Corporation) with the goal of creating innovative new electronic products.
Morita is known for his role in the development of the first transistor radio, which Sony launched in 1955. He also helped to establish Sony's reputation for innovation and quality by introducing a number of groundbreaking products, including the Walkman portable cassette player in 1979.
