The dates of Janmashtami keep shifting every year in the English Calendar, just like those of Eid. But this time the dates even in Hindu Mythology are elusive.

Pundits and astrologers tell us that this is because there are two kind of factions who celebrate Krishna Janmashtami. These two factions are Smraat and Vaishnav. So it is according to these two factions that the date or dates of Janmashtami are declared.

Those who worship Panchdev, or five gods, Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh, Ganesh, and Uma, belong to Smraat faction.

According to Hindu Panchaang, Lord Krishna was born on Ashtmi, or the eighth date of Bhaad Maas’s Krishna Paksha, at midnight. This time and date of Hindu calendar coincides with 8:47 pm on 2nd September to 8:04 pm on 3rd September, on English calendar. Hence, Janmashtami this year, is falling on two days.
