The clinical term for the condition that people who are afraid to stay home alone have is known as autophobia. This phobia can also be given other names which include monophobia, eremophobia and isolophobia. There are many reasons why a person might be afraid to stay at home alone. Some of those reasons are:

  • Having a panic attack
  • Being ignored by peers, or not being taken care of properly by family members and/or loved ones
  • Being left alone in the time of a traumatic event/experience
  • Having a parent or a sibling with either the same or a different condition

Apart from these, there are many other reasons of having this phobia, however, these are the main ones.

Hope this answers your question.

There are several reasons why people might be afraid to stay alone:

  • Fear of loneliness: Humans are social beings, and many people find comfort and security in the presence of others. Being alone can make them feel isolated, which can trigger feelings of sadness, depression, or anxiety.

  • Fear of vulnerability: Some people are afraid to be alone because it makes them feel vulnerable. They worry that they won't be able to protect themselves if something goes wrong, or that they won't have anyone to turn to if they need help.

  • Fear of past traumas: People who have experienced past traumas or have a history of anxiety or depression may find it challenging to be alone with their thoughts. Being alone can trigger negative emotions or memories, which can be overwhelming.
