I genuinely believe media shapes expectations more than it reflects them. Kids grow up watching TV shows and movies where women are objects and men are action heroes, and that becomes normal to them. I've noticed that when I see strong female characters leading stories, it actually shifts how I consider what women can do.
Media doesn't just show us reality. It tells us what's acceptable and desirable. Advertisements sell impossible beauty standards to women and emotional distance to men. When we keep seeing the same gender stereotypes repeated, they become invisible truths.
But here's the hopeful part: when media improves representation, society shifts too. I've seen younger generations think differently about gender because they grew up with better role models on screen. Media companies have considerable power to either reinforce harmful stereotypes or challenge them. They should take that responsibility seriously.
