Tea can be used as a stress reliever naturally; however, it is something that must be pointed out: it is not technically classified as a medicine in the classical definition of the term. Some of the herbal teas, for example, such as chamomile, lavender, and lemon balm, are commonly reported to have a calming effect and are used to assist in reducing anxiety to the degree to which they create a sense of relaxation.

Moreover, even teas that are more traditionally associated with the effects of caffeine, such as green and black teas, contain L-theanine—a unique amino acid that has been found to create a state of relaxation without causing drowsiness or fatigue. Finally, the warmth of the tea and the ritual of drinking it can in and of itself be a relaxing and comforting experience, which allows the space of awareness in the midst of a busy day. While it should be pointed out that tea should never be considered as a replacement for professional counseling in the case of stress or anxiety, especially if chronic, it is nonetheless a comforting and supportive addition to a full stress-management program.
