Till now, 40 jawans have been confirmed dead; many are critically injured. The terror attack, one of the worst on security forces in J&K history, took place on the Srinagar-Jammu highway at Latoomode in Awantipora, South Kashmir.

• Around the time, more than 2,500 CRPF personnel were traveling in the convoy of 78 vehicles. Many of them were returning back from a leave to rejoin their duty in the state.

• Following the attack, the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad terror outfit took the responsibility. The suicide bomber is identified as Adil Ahmad Dar, also known as "Waqas Commando of Gundibagh". 22 years in age, he joined the terror group only last year. • Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi immediately tweeted about the incident, condemning the attack. " Attack on CRPF personnel in Pulwama is despicable. I strongly condemn this dastardly attack. The sacrifices of our brave security personnel shall not go in vain. The entire nation stands shoulder to shoulder with the families of the brave martyrs. May the injured recover quickly," he said.

• In his most recent tweet, PM Modi said that a befitting reply would be given to the perpetrators. "A grateful nation bows to the martyrs of Pulwama. A befitting reply will be given to the perpetrators of the heinous attack and their patrons. No force will succeed in disturbing the peace, progress, and stability of India."

• Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh issued a statement. He said, "Jaish-e-Mohammed has carried out this terror attack. We assure the country that we will understand whatever it takes to avenge this." • One of the CRPF officer, requesting anonymity, said to TOI: "Usually, keeping mind that civilians don't feel harassed by our movement, we allow commute vehicles on the highway when we are on the move. If the Scorpio car had come far, it would have been stopped at some checkpoint, but it probably used a side road to enter the highway like other civilian vehicles."

• "We will crush terrorism. Forces have been given full freedom… I understand that the nation is angry. We trust the Indian Army's valor and courage. I want to tell you that forces responsible for the attack will be punished," said PM Modi.
