Emmys 2018 have been a rather pleasant surprise with people being in a little bit of shock and a lot of awe over the results. While some of big runners bagged the award even without a commanding presence this year (read: Game of Thrones), others like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Americans, The Crown, and Westworld are finally getting their due credit and recognition.
The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards saw The Crown take important wins like Lead Actress in a Drama Series that was bagged by Clair Foy, and director for a drama series that was bagged by Stephen Daldry, for the episode “Paterfamilias”. The Crown had been popular on Netflix as a drama that shows the life and times of Queen Elizabeth the Second and was going unnoticed because of the presence of goliaths like Game of Thrones.
But this year, finally with that scale being on the lighter side, crown bagged its titles and a saw its moment of glory!
On the other hand, a rather amusing incident happened when Matthew Rhys bagged the role for the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his part in FX’s period spy thriller, The Americans. The actor gave a funny speech with an interesting anecdote about his girlfriend and series co-star Keri Russel. He went on to say how the son they had was a product of working together for the Americans and said that she had earlier mentioned that she would punch him if he used his time on stage to propose to her.
Such incidents are rare – but bring an unrealized smile to your face whenever you see it!
There have been criticism and lukewarm feeling on this years Emmy hosts as well Colin Jost and Michael Che on their insensitive brand of humor that is not being appreciated by Hollywood in the #MeToo era.
And the duo did seem to be sluggish in their hosting with problems like making Jesus jokes, that weren’t that funny in the first place and then repeating it time and again. In fact, a lot of left leaning New York magazines were disappointed with the way the whole ceremony went about, from acceptance speeches, to letting the #NotAllMen duo host the show!
So this year’s Emmys were kind of a mix and had good things and bad, but that’s how life is and you really cannot please everyone!
