Mahashivratri is celebrated in the Krishna Paksha, in the month of Falgun. Mahashivratri comes once a year and the prayer of Lord Shiva is very essential on this day.

People observe fast on this day to impress the deity.
According to the traditional belief, Lord Shiva was married to Goddess Parvati on the day of Shivratri, and hence it is celebrated with great vigor and enthusiasm by the devotees of Lord Shiva.
Hindu devotees observe the fast for Lord Shiva every Monday, but on Shivratri, the process of the Pooja is more detailed. The practice is done for a happy and peaceful life and for the fulfillment of all our wishes.
• On the day of Mahashivratri, the best time for the prayer of Lord Shiva is 4 am.
• There are some special stuff that you need to have for the worship, like a Kalash (metal pot), milk, curd, sugar, honey, rice, turmeric, Ganga Jal, white flowers, red vermilion, sandalwood, berries, leaves, and a lighted lamp.
• First of all, offer water to the idol of Lord Shiva and then offer milk, curd, sugar, honey, and turmeric.
• Offer water again and then bathe the idol with Gangajal.
• Apply sandalwood on the forehead of the idol and then decorate the idol.
• Now offer dry vermillion 11 times with your fingers.
• Then offer wet rice to the idol of Lord Shiva.
• Also, offer leaves and flowers, and perform the Arti with the lighted lamp.
• The whole time you are performing Arti, keep chanting the following verse:
Om trayambake yajamahe sugandhim pushti vardhanam
Urvarukmiv bandhanan mrityormukshiya mamrataat
