Why is there a shortage of gas cylinders today?

Today, many people in India are facing a big problem because there is a sudden shortage of gas cylinders in the market. If you are also waiting for your Indane, HP, or Bharat Gas delivery, there are a few simple reasons behind this delay.

First, the main reason is the high demand during the current season. When there are many festivals or a sudden change in weather, everyone starts booking their refills at the same time. This puts a lot of pressure on the bottling plants. Sometimes, the supply chain gets broken because of transport strikes or bad weather in some states, which stops the trucks from reaching the local distributors on time.

Another reason is the new digital rules. Sometimes the server of the booking app or the Aadhaar authentication system goes down, making it hard for delivery boys to close the old bookings. Also, many local agencies are facing a shortage of delivery staff. Because of this, even if the cylinders are available in the godown, they are not reaching our kitchens quickly.

To avoid this trouble, it is better to book your cylinder at least 4-5 days before it gets empty. If the delay is more than a week, you should visit your local gas agency office directly to check the status.

Bro, right now in March 2026, the main reason there's a shortage (or at least it feels like one) for gas cylinders is the ongoing war mess in the Middle East — specifically the US-Israel conflict with Iran that's basically shut down or heavily disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

India imports a huge chunk of its LPG (around 60%), and like 85-90% of that normally comes through that strait from places like Qatar, Saudi Arabia, etc. When tankers can't pass safely or get delayed/force majeure'd, supplies get hit hard and fast. Domestic production can't fully cover the gap overnight, even though refineries have cranked up output by 25-28% in the last week or so.

The government is prioritizing household cylinders (that's why domestic bookings are still happening, though with longer waits in some places), but commercial ones for hotels/restaurants are getting squeezed big time — that's why you see more panic reports from there. People are panic-booking like crazy, which is making the lines longer and agencies run dry temporarily, even though the Centre keeps saying "no nationwide crisis, deliveries in 2-3 days, don't hoard."

They've even stretched the minimum booking gap to 25 days from 21 to control demand. Prices went up too (₹60 extra for domestic cylinders recently), and black market rates are insane in some spots.

So yeah, it's not a "no gas at all" situation everywhere, but in Delhi and many cities, deliveries are delayed, bookings are tough, and everyone's stressed because of the geopolitics + panic. Hopefully alternative routes or more imports kick in soon, but right now it's tense. Hang in there, maybe switch to induction for a bit if you can!
