Various studies have found out that the electric activities in our brain which are responsible for the sensations like smell, memory, and emotions are coordinated the rhythm of our breathing.
Connection Between Breathing Patterns and Brain
Breathing pattern is important for the functioning of organs as it decides the amount of oxygen that is to be supplied to the body every second and oxygen is the essential component to keep it going. For brain, in particular, the rhythm of breathing coordinates a type of an electrical activity across a wide network of brain regions, especially the ones associated with smell, memory, emotions. They are even believed to enhance the functioning of these regions.
Approx 75 years ago, a renowned British psychologist Edgar Adrian took the help of electrodes to record brain activity in hedgehogs. He observed that the brain waves of the olfactory system were directly affected by the speed of air passing through the nose. Throughout the years similar observations have been made in multiple experiments conducted on other small animals like rats and mice etc.
In another research on seven patients being evaluated for surgery to treat drug-resistant temporal lobe epilepsy, researchers found that slow brain wave oscillations in the piriform cortex, and a relatively higher frequency waves in the hippocampus and amygdala, tend to synchronised with the rate of natural, spontaneous breathing. Importantly, though, immediately after the patients breathed in, the brain wave oscillations in all three regions were most highly synchronised but less so while they were breathing out. During the experiment, when these patients were asked to breath through their mouths, the researchers observed a significant decrease in brain wave coupling. This brought them to the conclusion that the air that enters the human body through nose helped synchronize the activity of neurons in three major regions of the brain.
