Serena Williams has been very vocal about women rights since her final US Open 2018 match against Naomi Osaka. People might have seen it as a publicity and attention-gaining stunt in the name of feminism, but some things, if analyzed critically, were indeed needed to be given voice for the female tennis players and Williams did that successfully.
After the match Serena Williams said,
"I just feel like the fact that I have to go through this is just an example for the next person that has emotions, and that want to express themselves, and want to be a strong woman.
"They're going to be allowed to do that because of today. Maybe it didn't work out for me, but it's going to work out for the next person." (Source: Channel NewsAsia)
Coming to the current headlines that Williams is making, it is about the awareness of Breast Cancer. She uploaded a video of herself in which she was topless and singing The Divinyls global hit 'I Touch Myself'. This was to remind women to check themselves regularly and be aware of the disease they may acquire later in future.
Serena Williams did this for women health, after herself facing many challenges related to women’s health when she became mother.
Putting it in her own words,
“Yes, this put me out of my comfort zone, but I wanted to do it because it’s an issue that affects all women of all colors, all around the world."
Serena Williams, despite being world’s greatest female tennis player, has faced struggles on grounds of sexism and health quite a lot of time and hence she is much more concerned and aware of the problems faced by women. Breast Cancer, is one such struggle which she doesn’t want any woman to suffer from.
